Alice Springs |
|
In the center of the
Northern Territory is Alice Springs, a spirited bush town that grew from
humble beginnings. “The Alice,” as locals call it, has since grown into
a modern town that wears its Outback heritage proudly.
Because of its central location and its nearby red colored rock
formations and the red sand desert area, the town is also called the Red
Centre. It has some wonderful sights to explore, such as the telegraph
station, the botanical garden and the Spencer and Gillen museum. This
rollicking town is also a day trip from the iconic attractions of
Uluru-Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and several nature parks. |

Ayers Rock |
|
Southwest of Alice
Springs is Ayers Rock/ Uluru, the world's largest monolith, an
Aboriginal sacred site, and Australia's most famous natural landmark.
Visitors may wish to make the tough ascent to the top, or take a walking
tour around the rock with an aboriginal guide to learn about its history
with the Uluru people and its importance in dreamtime legend.
At the base of Uluru, there are cave paintings and carvings made over
many thousands of years by Anangu belonging to the Luritja,
Yankuntjatjara and Pitjantjatjara language groups. Ayers Rock and its
surrounding area is an ancient sacred place for the Anangu people.

Darwin |
|
Darwin has a relaxed
outdoor lifestyle and enjoys warm weather all year round. Perched on a
peninsula with sea on three sides, it is an excellent base to explore
the natural attractions of World Heritage listed national parks. Its
city has the most youthful population in Australia, giving it a
distinctly optimistic vibe.
Historic Darwin Harbour is dotted with sunken ships from World War II
and confiscated Indonesian fishing vessels. Its healthy population of
tropical fish makes it a world class fishing destination. Turquoise
waters set the scene for a sunset cruise. |
