A pilgrimage is a devotional practice consisting of a prolonged journey, or search of moral or spiritual significance. Typically, it is a journey to a shrine or other location of importance to a person's beliefs and faith.
 
 

 

 

Litmanova -The village of Litmanová, not far from town of Stará Ľubovňa, has come to attention in recent decades. Between August 5th, 1990 and August 6th, 1995, the Virgin Mary appeared on several occasions to two girls on Mountain Zvir, under the title of The Immaculate Purity. There is now a Marian shrine at the place of the apparitions.

 

 

Fatima is a small town in Portugal located north of Lisbon. It is a major Catholic pilgrimage site because of reported sightings of the Virgin Mary in 1917 by three local shepherd children. Our Lady of Fatima appeared on six occasions throughout 1917. She first appeared on May 13. Following the initial event, the children reported seeing the vision five more times, once each month through October.The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is one of most famous Marian shrines in the world.

 

 

Knock is a village in County Mayo, Ireland. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Knock, commonly referred to as Knock Shrine, is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage site and national shrine where locals claimed to have seen an apparition in 1879 of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint John the Evangelist, angels, and Jesus. 15 people from the village witnessed an apparition of Mary on the gable wall of the parish church.

 

 

Santiago de Compostela is a city of about 90,000 people in Galicia, northwestern Spain. Santiago's name and fame both derive from Saint James the Apostle (Sant Iago), whose holy relics are believed to be enshrined under the cathedral's altar. Santiago became a major pilgrimage destination. Devout pilgrims traveled long distances along the Camino de Santiago ("Route of St. James"), a series of pilgrimage roads throughout France and Spain, to pray at the tomb of St. James and gain religious merit.

 

 

Jerusalem is sacred to the three great monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam - which means it is sacred to more than a third of the world's population. For Jews, Jerusalem is the site of the Temple, now in ruins except for the Western Wall; for Christians, it is the site of Christ's death and resurrection; for Muslims, it is the site of the Prophet's night journey to heaven. Jerusalem is therefore a major site of pilgrimage for all three religions.

Guadalupe is a major Catholic site in the outskirts of Mexico City. In 1999, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City became the most-visited Catholic shrine in the world. Our Lady of Guadalupe is an aspect of the Virgin Mary who appeared to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. According to the traditional account, Juan Diego was walking between his village and Mexico City on December 12, 1531 when Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared, speaking to him in his native Nahuatl language. She told him to build a church at the site.
